Explore the Benefits of a Bathroom Washbasin

Below, we outline the numerous advantages of having a washbasin in your bathroom

Hygiene: Bathroom basins primarily serve the purpose of hand and face washing, contributing to the prevention of infection and germ spread

Convenience and Functionality: Strategically positioned near toilets, bathroom basins are easily accessible, facilitating efficient hand washing after toilet use and meals

Aesthetics: Bathroom washbasins are available in a variety of styles that can seamlessly complement any decor. They add a touch of beauty and elegance to your bathroom, enhancing its overall ambiance

When selecting a bathroom basin, several considerations come into play. Size, style, and material are all crucial factors to ponder. Additionally, it's essential to ensure that your chosen bathroom washbasin is easy to clean and maintain

Key Considerations for Choosing Your Ideal Bathroom Basin

Here are some additional tips for choosing the right washbasin for your bathroom

Size Matters: Consider the dimensions of your bathroom. For smaller spaces, opt for a compact basin to maximize space efficiency, as a smaller bathroom washbasin can be just as functional as a larger one

Style Harmony: Choose a style that harmonizes with your bathroom decor. The market offers a wide variety of bathroom basin styles, allowing you to select one that resonates with your personal taste. Ensure that the pattern or style of the washbasin seamlessly integrates with your bathroom's aesthetics

Material Selection: Bathroom washbasins are crafted from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, and stainless steel. Each material has its unique advantages and drawbacks. If you seek an elegant, alluring basin for personal use, consider ceramic or porcelain. For high-frequency use, stainless steel is a more durable choice

Ease of Maintenance: It's imperative to choose a bathroom basin that is easy to clean and maintain. A washbasin that's challenging to clean can quickly become unsightly.

Before choosing a washbasin, you must already determine what type of installation you want.

Countertop basin
This type of basin is quite recent. It is very easy to install because it is simply placed on a support. This can be a vanity, a console or any piece of furniture. The washbasin is therefore completely visible. This is the reason why it is important to choose the shape and colour of the basin carefully.
There are several ways to install the tap on this type of basin. If it has been equipped with a tap hole, it can be directly fixed on it. Otherwise, it can be mounted on the support's surface or on the wall.
Many manufacturers have developed product ranges with all types of basins, such as Villeroy & Boch with the Architectura range. However, when you buy a countertop basin, it is necessary to check that the bottom is flat sanded.

Inset Basin
It is the most common type of washbasin. Built-in from above in a piece of furniture or a console, the edge of the basin is visible.

Under Counter Basin
This one is different from the precedent in that it is built-in from below so that it sits within your bathroom counter. Therefore, no edge is visible which makes cleaning much easier.

Wall-Mounted Basin
A piece of furniture or a console are not needed. Holes are drilled into the wall to fix the washbasin. As it takes little space, it is mainly used in small rooms.

Washbasin Unit
The washbasin is readily inserted in a piece of furniture and both are sold as a set. It is practical and cheaper than buying each piece separately.

Stand Mounted Basin
This washbasin stands on its own foot. A column or a piece of furniture is under the basin.

Would you prefer a small basin or a big one? This decision relies mostly on the size of your bathroom. In small bathrooms, a large basin can quickly become obtrusive or simply take up too much space.
In principle, the model and size should be tailored to your individual needs. There are also washbasins for people with reduced mobility, as proposed by the Keramag brand.

There are washbasins of all sizes and shapes. The most common forms are:

The edges of it can be rounded, thin and thus, specific to the type of basin.
In addition, manufacturers now offer asymmetric and corner washbasins, such as the one offered by Ideal Standard in the Connect range.
Some manufacturers even offer basins with bigger edges so that you can place a soap dispenser or toothbrush glass.

Ceramics no longer has the exclusivity in the design of basins. Other materials are suitable:

Ceramic is still the most commonly used material for washbasins. It is known for its robustness, durability, smooth surface and resistance to cleaning products and chemicals. However, ceramic is very heavy.

Mineral casting
Mineral casting is an alloy of acrylic or synthetic resin and natural minerals. It is known for its smooth surface, robustness and ease of cleaning. However, the material is very sensitive to scratches and stains, but it is easy to repair.

Enamelled steel
Enamelled steel is very pleasant to the touch. This material is fire and scratch resistant and has a smooth surface. However, it can be easily damaged with pointed objects.

Sanitary acrylic
Acrylic is scratch and impact resistant and has a warm and soft feel. Additionally, it can be declined in several colours. Nonetheless, contacts with aggressive cleaning products should be avoid.

Wood can also be used to design basins. It is coated to make it waterproof. Wood gives a warm appearance to the bathroom. The characteristic wood grain makes each washbasin unique and an ideal design object.

Glass is increasingly used in bathrooms. It brings modernity and is very resistant as it is used in double layer. In addition, the glass is easy to tint, which allows colourful variants.

Natural stone
Natural stone is a real eye-catcher in the bathroom, but it must also be regularly maintained. The washbasins are coated to make them waterproof and prevent limescale.

Stainless steel
In general, stainless steel washbasins are mainly used in kitchens or public places. They have the advantage of being robust and very easy to maintain. Again though, aggressive cleaning products may scratch its surface.

In addition, some brands have developed specific coatings that make materials more durable and easier to maintain.  For example, Keramag offers KeraTect® coating. This coating prevents dirt from sticking to the bowl, is resistant to detergents and guaranteed by the brand for 30 years. You will find the washbasins with this coating in our online shop.

Colourful washbasins

The classic colour is white, but other colours are increasingly appearing in bathrooms. Some manufacturers offer black, red, blue, or chrome basins. Depending on the material other colours are available. Glass and acryl are versatile. Design your bathroom in a uniform colour concept or set specific colour accents with your new washbasin.

One of the parameters to consider when choosing a basin is the overflow. Its absence improves aesthetic and hygiene as the overflow hole is difficult to clean. However, overflows should still be avoided:

The basin can be equipped with a special CLOU system, which triggers the evacuation of water when it reaches a certain level.

The basin can contain an integrated overflow. This is hidden inside the basin and as soon as the water level is too high, the basin no longer fills, and the water flows directly into an overflow pipe. Each manufacturer has determined a specific name for this system. For example, Ideal Standard calls it Ideal Flow.

The basin can also be used with a plug that cannot be completely closed.

In addition, it is possible to install a tap with a security shut-off device.
We invite you to think about which type of basin is best for you and to contact us if you have any questions about certain products.

Tap installation

Most basins have a tap hole. Depending on the basin, you can install the faucet in the centre or on one end of it. You will find all types of taps in our online shop.
